The primary reason for introducing savings accounts first is to prevent children from having $600 in cash in their pencil box, which will blow up every time they open it. I might have had to learn this lesson the hard way. Twice a month, after each student shops in our class store, I meet with them to help them deposit the money into their accounts. Students understand that they must have their money totaled and ready to go before coming to meet with me during seat work, snack time, morning work, or even small group math time, which makes hosting this one-on-one meeting quick.
Retirement
However, I remind them that they will eventually "retire" from fifth grade. During the final week of classes, a selection of more expensive products will be available for purchase in honor of that day. Compared to a classroom savings account, the classroom retirement account has the advantage of compound interest, which allows the retirement to grow at a rate of 3%. The sole restriction is that they are not allowed to access this account until we pay out all of our accounts for retirement.
